📋 About the Role
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is India's premier nuclear research institution, founded in 1954 and operating under the Department of Atomic Energy. With a network of laboratories spread across Mumbai, Trombay, Hyderabad, and other locations, BARC drives cutting‑edge research in nuclear energy, radiation technology, and advanced scientific instrumentation. The organization is renowned for its contributions to India's nuclear power programme, medical isotopes, and high‑performance computing platforms that support national scientific initiatives. BARC’s culture blends rigorous scientific inquiry with a strong sense of public service, offering a stable career path for engineers and scientists who wish to work on projects of national importance.
The role of Scientific Officer (Group A) is a flagship entry‑level position for fresh engineering graduates. Officers are posted to the Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates (OCES/DGFS) where they undergo intensive training before being assigned to mission‑critical projects. The primary focus is on developing software that controls nuclear reactors, creates high‑fidelity simulation models, and leverages high‑performance computing (HPC) to solve complex physics problems. Officers will collaborate with senior scientists, nuclear engineers, and IT specialists to translate theoretical models into reliable, production‑grade code.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Design, develop, and validate software modules for reactor control and safety systems.
2. Build and maintain large‑scale simulation models for neutron transport, thermal hydraulics, and fuel behavior.
3. Optimize algorithms for HPC environments using parallel programming techniques.
4. Conduct code reviews, enforce coding standards, and ensure documentation compliance.
5. Perform verification and validation (V&V) activities against experimental data.
6. Troubleshoot and resolve performance bottlenecks in simulation pipelines.
7. Contribute to research papers and technical reports for internal and external dissemination.
8. Mentor junior interns and assist in knowledge‑transfer sessions.
9. Stay updated with emerging technologies such as GPU computing, AI‑driven modeling, and quantum simulations.
10. Participate in cross‑functional meetings to align software deliverables with hardware and physics teams.
Tech Stack: C, C++, Python, Fortran (legacy codes), MPI/OpenMP for parallelism, Linux/Unix environments, version control (Git), and specialized simulation tools like MCNP, RELAP5, and ANSYS Fluent.
Growth Path: Officers start as Group A Scientific Officers, progress to Senior Scientific Officer, then to Principal Scientist or Project Leader, with opportunities to lead national‑level research programmes. BARC also supports higher studies (Ph.D.) and international collaborations, ensuring a vibrant career trajectory.
Why Join BARC? Working at BARC means contributing to India's strategic scientific goals, accessing world‑class research facilities, and enjoying a secure, government‑backed employment package. The organization offers generous leave policies, housing assistance, and continuous learning programmes, making it an attractive choice for ambitious engineers.
