Within the Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) division, the Global Strategy, Operations & Performance (GSOP) team focuses on delivering a premium merchant experience. The team works closely with product, operations, risk and compliance functions to ensure that merchants not only accept American Express cards but also become advocates for the brand. The First Line of Defense (1LOD) Compliance Analyst role sits at the intersection of business operations and regulatory oversight, helping the organization embed compliance into everyday processes.
**Role Summary**
The 1LOD Compliance Analyst will support front‑line business teams in interpreting and applying complaints‑related policies and U.S. banking regulations. By monitoring complaint data, preparing oversight reports, and coordinating remediation activities, the analyst ensures that GMNS operations remain aligned with internal governance standards and external regulatory expectations. This position offers exposure to a matrixed environment, cross‑functional collaboration, and the chance to influence risk‑aware decision‑making.
**Key Responsibilities**
1. Guide front‑line teams on complaints policies and basic regulatory requirements (BSA/AML, UDAAP, Reg E, Reg Z, Fair Lending, Privacy).
2. Assist in monthly complaints oversight – data collection, monitoring, reporting and issue tracking.
3. Analyse complaint trends, surface common themes and flag potential risk signals.
4. Coordinate with GMNS markets and functional teams to ensure consistent complaint handling processes.
5. Maintain and enhance complaints frameworks, tools, and trackers for transparency.
6. Track remediation actions, ensure timely documentation and follow‑up.
7. Support consumer‑protection and conduct monitoring activities related to complaints.
8. Document issues identified during audits, examinations or internal reviews and drive remediation.
9. Keep governance artefacts up‑to‑date – procedures, process docs, training material.
10. Liaise with Compliance, Legal and Risk partners to gather information, track requests and document outcomes.
**Tech Stack & Tools**
The role primarily uses Excel/Google Sheets for data analysis, PowerBI or Tableau for visual reporting, SQL for querying internal databases, and compliance platforms such as MetricStream or RSA Archer. Familiarity with document‑management tools (SharePoint, Confluence) and collaboration suites (Teams, Slack) is also beneficial.
**Growth Path**
Analyst → Senior Analyst → Associate Manager → Manager → Senior Manager → Director (Compliance/Risk). The role provides a clear trajectory into higher‑impact risk‑management positions, with opportunities to lead larger remediation programmes and influence policy design.
**Why Join American Express**
American Express is synonymous with brand prestige, robust learning ecosystems and a people‑first culture. Employees enjoy competitive base salaries, performance bonuses, comprehensive health and wellness benefits, flexible hybrid/remote work options, and generous parental leave. The company invests heavily in career development through formal training, mentorship programmes and global mobility, making it an ideal place for fresh graduates to launch a long‑term career in compliance and risk management.
