📋 About the Role
Razorpay, founded in 2014, has quickly become one of India’s premier full‑stack fintech companies. With a vision to simplify payments for Indian businesses, it now powers millions of merchants across India, Singapore and Malaysia, handling more than $180 billion in annualized transactions. The company’s product suite spans seamless checkout experiences, payroll automation, AI‑driven fraud detection, real‑time risk intelligence, automated reconciliation, smart payouts and predictive financial insights. Backed by global investors such as GIC, Tiger Global and Mastercard, Razorpay has raised over $740 million and acquired several strategic assets like Ezetap, Curlec and BillMe, cementing its position as a financial infrastructure leader in Asia.
The culture at Razorpay is built around ownership, autonomy and relentless learning. Engineers are encouraged to own end‑to‑end outcomes, interact directly with senior leadership and even question CXOs without hesitation. Transparency, agility and a customer‑first mindset drive daily decisions, while the company’s rapid growth offers ample opportunities for career acceleration and skill diversification.
The Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) role sits at the intersection of deep engineering expertise and high‑touch merchant partnership. An FDE is embedded with one of Razorpay’s most strategic merchants—such as Nvidia, Airbnb, Meta or Shopify—and acts as the single technical point of contact. The role is not a traditional support or consulting position; it requires you to translate vague business problems into concrete technical solutions, build and ship production‑grade code, and leverage AI‑driven coding agents to accelerate delivery. When patterns emerge across multiple merchants, the FDE feeds those learnings back into the core product teams, amplifying impact across the platform.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Own the technical success of an assigned merchant, serving as the sole engineering liaison.
2. Engage with merchant engineering and business teams to scope problems and draft precise technical plans before contracts are signed.
3. Write, review and ship production‑grade code in Razorpay’s stack and, where permitted, in the merchant’s repositories.
4. Implement custom payment flows, SDK integrations, orchestration logic and server‑to‑server webhooks.
5. Leverage AI coding, knowledge and routing agents for routine PRs, contextual insights and incident triage, becoming the most AI‑leveraged engineer in the org.
6. Document reusable patterns and hand them over to product pods for platform‑wide adoption.
7. Maintain a regular cadence of progress updates with the merchant and respond to any raised issues within two hours.
8. Conduct post‑deployment monitoring, debugging and performance tuning across distributed cloud environments.
9. Collaborate with internal security, compliance and product teams to ensure solutions meet regulatory and risk standards.
10. Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal best‑practice libraries.
Tech stack expectations: strong proficiency in Python and at least one of Java, Go or TypeScript; deep experience with RESTful APIs, webhooks, cloud platforms (AWS/GCP), containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines. Familiarity with payments ecosystems, AI‑assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT) and modern observability stacks is essential.
Growth path: Successful FDEs can progress to Senior Engineer, Tech Lead for Strategic Merchant Partnerships, or move into Product Management or Solutions Architecture leadership tracks. The role provides unparalleled exposure to Fortune‑500 merchants, high‑impact fintech problems and cutting‑edge AI tooling, positioning candidates for rapid career advancement.
Why join Razorpay? You will gain deep domain expertise in payments, work directly with world‑class merchants, ship features at a pace few organisations allow, and become a pioneer in AI‑native engineering. The company’s meritocratic culture, strong compensation, and clear visibility with senior leadership make it an ideal place for ambitious engineers seeking both technical depth and business impact.
