📋 About the Role
IBM is a world‑renowned technology leader that builds AI‑powered, cloud‑native products to solve complex business challenges. With a heritage of more than a century of innovation, IBM offers a culture that encourages curiosity, continuous learning, and collaboration across diverse teams and industries. Employees get access to cutting‑edge platforms, research labs, and a global network that fuels personal and professional growth.
The role of Software Engineer – Confluent sits within IBM Software’s Hybrid Observability & Management charter, which delivers enterprise‑grade management, observability, and security for both on‑premise and cloud deployments of the Confluent Platform. The team works on two flagship products – Unified Stream Manager (USM) and Confluent Control Center (C3). As an early‑career engineer you will contribute to well‑scoped features, receive mentorship from senior engineers, and gradually own a sub‑component of the platform.
**Key Responsibilities**
1. Deliver well‑defined tasks and features for USM or C3 on schedule, following IBM’s code‑review process.
2. Contribute to USM capabilities (Agent, Cloud Console) or C3 workflows (cluster health, topic visibility, consumer monitoring, connector status).
3. Write concise design one‑pagers for assigned sub‑tasks and incorporate stakeholder feedback.
4. Follow Confluent’s engineering standards, including coding conventions, Dev/Prod tooling, and release processes.
5. Develop unit and integration tests, fix bugs, and participate actively in peer code reviews.
6. Assist in troubleshooting production incidents by analyzing logs, metrics, and traces with guidance from senior teammates.
7. Participate in an on‑call rotation, learning to debug and mitigate issues under mentorship.
8. Take ownership of a specific sub‑component, becoming the go‑to person for its design, implementation, and support.
9. Continuously improve knowledge of distributed systems, Kafka, and cloud‑native technologies.
10. Collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams, sharing knowledge and contributing to a culture of quality craftsmanship.
**Tech Stack & Tools**: Java, Go, Apache Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS/GCP/Azure, Prometheus/Grafana for observability, Git, Jenkins/ArgoCD for CI/CD.
**Growth Path**: Starting as a Software Engineer, you can progress to Senior Engineer, Lead Engineer, and eventually Architecture or Management roles, with opportunities to work on larger product areas, mentor new hires, and influence IBM’s cloud‑native strategy.
**Why Join IBM?** IBM offers a globally recognized brand, exposure to cutting‑edge technologies, and a supportive environment that values learning. Employees benefit from structured career development programs, flexible work arrangements, and a strong emphasis on work‑life balance. The company’s commitment to open source and community engagement also provides avenues to contribute beyond internal projects.
