The role of Software Engineer 2 – Backend is positioned within the core engineering team that builds and operates the high‑throughput integration layer of the platform. As a backend engineer you will design, develop, and maintain micro‑services that connect thousands of carriers and customers to the project44 network. You will work in a multi‑cloud environment (AWS and GCP) and collaborate closely with product, data, and operations teams to deliver reliable, low‑latency services that power real‑time shipment tracking and analytics. Key responsibilities: 1. Design and implement scalable Java‑based micro‑services for carrier and customer integrations. 2. Manage the full lifecycle of integrations, from onboarding to decommissioning. 3. Operate, monitor and continuously improve the supply‑chain visibility platform. 4. Build and maintain event‑driven pipelines using Kafka or Kinesis for real‑time data flow. 5. Develop and optimise database schemas and queries on PostgreSQL, DynamoDB or MongoDB. 6. Write robust APIs (REST, OpenAPI/Swagger) and ensure high‑quality documentation. 7. Participate in on‑call rotations, create tooling and automation to enhance incident response. 8. Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to troubleshoot complex production issues. 9. Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, containerisation (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes). 10. Mentor junior engineers and share best practices around code quality, testing and performance.
