📋 About the Role
IBM is a global technology and consulting leader with a legacy that stretches back to 1911. The company designs, builds, and operates advanced IT infrastructure, ranging from high‑resiliency mainframes and hybrid cloud platforms to networking, automation, and site‑reliability solutions. IBM’s Infrastructure & Technology division is the backbone that keeps critical systems running for Fortune 500 clients, governments, and enterprises worldwide. The division fosters a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and continuous learning, encouraging engineers to solve complex problems that shape the future of computing.
The Backend Developer role sits within IBM Storage, a key pillar of the Infrastructure & Technology business. In this position you will design, develop, unit‑test, and deliver software offerings for IBM Storage products such as Enterprise Flash, Disk, Tape, and Cloud Storage services. Working in an agile environment with DevOps tooling, you will translate client requirements into robust, high‑performance code while adhering to fail‑first, fail‑fast principles. The role demands close collaboration with cross‑functional teams, rigorous debugging, and performance optimisation to meet strategic imperatives around artificial intelligence and cloud.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Design and develop end‑to‑end backend solutions using Embedded C, C, Python, GoLang, and Java.
2. Participate in agile ceremonies, sprint planning, and continuous integration pipelines.
3. Write unit tests, conduct code reviews, and ensure high code quality and resiliency.
4. Debug kernel‑level issues using kernel debuggers and optimise user‑mode components.
5. Build device drivers and system utilities for Linux, Unix, AIX, and RTOS platforms.
6. Integrate storage protocols such as PCIe, NVMe, NVMeoF, Fibre Channel, and SCSI.
7. Contribute to AI‑enabled storage analytics and cloud‑native storage services.
8. Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and product teams to deliver end‑to‑end storage solutions.
9. Maintain documentation, release notes, and support knowledge‑base articles.
10. Mentor junior engineers and share best practices across the team.
The tech stack spans low‑level languages (Embedded C, C), high‑level languages (Python, GoLang, Java), scripting (Ansible), and DevOps tools (Git, Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes). Exposure to storage hardware, kernel development, and cloud APIs is essential. IBM offers a clear growth path: Junior Engineer → Engineer → Senior Engineer → Lead Engineer → Architecture roles, with opportunities to move across cloud, AI, and quantum computing domains. Joining IBM means access to world‑class learning platforms, mentorship from industry veterans, and the chance to work on products that power critical infrastructure worldwide. The company’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social responsibility creates an environment where every employee can thrive and make a meaningful impact.
